Stone Carving Class (May 2025)

In this 4-week course, sculptor Alex Khalifa will guide students through the fundamentals of carving stone by hand. The class is open to all experience levels, with personalized instruction to ensure each participant can progress at their own pace. From the initial block-in phase to an overview of final touches and polishing, by the end of the course participants will gain the knowledge and hands-on experience to continue working both independently and with further guidance.

Extensive open studio hours offer carvers the opportunity to work on their sculptures between class sessions and on their own time. A variety of tools including hammers, chisels, rasps, and rifflers are available for use during both class and open studio hours. The store has a diverse range of stones, available in various sizes, shapes, colors, textures, and hardness to help students conceptualize their own projects. (Please note: stone and safety gear must be purchased separately, with a 10% discount available for all students).

It is encouraged that students come prepared with reference materials or a project idea in mind!

The Portrait in Stone

This 5-day intensive workshop will focus on portrait sculpture in limestone (or alabaster). Demo pieces of a basic head in five stages of finish will be available for reference in the studio, as well as one-on-one guidance on technique and anatomy throughout the process. Please arrive with photo reference, sketches, or a maquette of the concept for your piece - especially if you're creating a portrait of a specific person.

Days 1-2: Air hammer block-in

Days 3-5: Hand tools (hammer & chisels, rasps)

Participants will end this workshop with a finished or ready-to-be-finished piece. Some stone carving experience is recommended.
